Insightful book about the global rise of living standards during the industrial era. Charts a path between the political left and right on where the data supports inferences on economic growth, health and wellbeing, and inequality. Deaton also generally reflects a recognition that economics often serves best by obtaining and analyzing data to demonstrate the impact of particular policies, but that actual policy choices really often reflect considerations of norms and values that cannot be determined by the data alone.However, I agree with many other reviewers that the final section on the ineffectiveness of international aid is a mismatch from the rest of the book. It is the least data-centered of the sections and the most like a one-sided persuasive essay. I think he raises a number of valid concerns and considerations about the efficacy of international aid as it is conducted, but I fail to be convinced by his seeming conviction that efforts to reform how aid is conducted would be fruitless. He comes off as a person who has become deeply disillusioned by development aid and can no longer see the legitimacy of any arguments in its favor. However, his even-handedness and open-mindedness about other economic matters in other areas of the book does mean that I am more willing to fully consider his arguments on this issue than I might have been from someone who had not demonstrated such qualities on other issues.

2015 Nobel prizewinner in Economics - Conversational writing style with enough research background to satisfy experts. This addresses the biggest issue of our time in money & inequality. Deaton has been studying this for more than 25 years. I have been studying this topic for 4 years for a local non-partisan civic organization. If I have one recommendation to read on this topic it would be this book. It lays out the facts and issues I have gleaned from a myriad of sources over the past few years.

This is clearly the most insightful book I've read for sometime. In contrast to so much we read today, this book is optimistic about social and economic progress. It's policy recommendations for developed countries are largely hurried and not very well justified -- all except for one, and that one is very important. He makes a very strong, fact based claim that foreign aide as we think of it is largely wasted. Amelioration of world poverty is just not feasible given the infrastructure of the countries that need it most. Clearly, just writing checks doesn't do it, he claims, despite the good intentions those accompanying those checks. But he doesn't advocate doing nothing. He just advocates a carefully administered program that helps underdeveloped countries, but only if they help themselves first.

Some great economists, which we used to know only through very formal papers, are proving to be good writer. Among them, Deaton excels. It brings very good stories with an exposition that we feel like reading a Tolstoi of Science. He knows how to tell good stories, which any scientific writing should search, and which involves concepts and notions that evolve. Has the human race made progress since the days when all our lives were nasty, brutish, and short?Some might think this question patently silly, since it would appear to answer itself. But Angus Deaton finds in it a point of entry into his inquiry on “health, wealth, and the origins of inequality,” the subtitle of his ambitious new book. He is in no doubt that humanity has progressed, not steadily but by fits and starts — and continues to do so to this day. “Today,” he writes, “children in sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to survive to age 5 than were English children born in 1918 . . . [and] India today has higher life expectancy than Scotland in 1945.”In The Great Escape, Deaton, a veteran professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton, explores inequality — between classes and between countries — with a detailed statistical analysis of trends in infant mortality, life expectancy, and income levels over the past 250 years. He concludes that the large-scale inequality that plagues policymakers and reformers alike in the present day is the result of the progress humanity has made since The Great Divergence (between “the West and the rest”) since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. “Economic growth,” Deaton asserts, “has been the engine of international income inequality.”No argument there: Deaton is far from alone in this belief. Other scholars have written extensively about this topic in recent years. A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, by Gregory Clark, is just one example.Late in the 18th Century, the countries of Northern Europe and North America on the one hand and those of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America on the other hand were not that far apart as measured by the available indicators of health and income. Deaton cites “one careful study [that] estimates that the average income of all the inhabitants of the world increased between seven and eight times from 1820 to 1992.” However, that average obscures a harsh reality. The ever-quickening rate of change in “the West” since 1760 or so has widened the gap between (and within) countries to an extreme degree. Deaton terms the freedom from destitution and early death that so many of us now enjoy “The Great Escape,” taking his title from the 1963 film of that name about a massive escape of prisoners from a German P.O.W. camp in World War II.Only now is the gap closing between the rich nations and China and India (by far the world’s two biggest countries, with nearly 40 percent of the planet’s population and half the world’s poor). Deaton doesn’t consider a bright future for all a certainty, not by any means, in view of global climate change and the ever-present threat of killer pandemics. But, assuming the species continues to thrive, there is sufficient data available now to have some confidence that the gross inequality now existing among nations will not persist forever. After all, five sub-Saharan African countries are now growing their economies faster than China’s.However, that misleading factoid ignores the outsize role that China has played in “the Great Escape” globally. Deaton notes, as have other observers, that “the number [of] people in the world living on less than a (2005) dollar a day fell from about 1.5 billion in 1981 to 805 million in 2008 . . . [This] decline in numbers is driven almost entirely by the Chinese growth miracle; if China is excluded, 785 million people lived on less than a dollar a day in 1981 compared with 708 million in 2008.” (This reality is one of the principal reasons why Paul Polak and I insist in The Business Solution to Poverty that traditional methods to end poverty have largely failed. After all, China’s methods were hardly traditional!)In the course of exploring the historical record of growing inequality on the world stage, Deaton delves deeply into the role of foreign aid (officially, Overseas Development Assistance, or ODA) and finds it comes up short. ”You cannot develop other countries from the outside with a shopping list for Home Depot, no matter how much you spend,” he writes. With the exception of outside interventions in public health programs — including such breakthroughs as the eradication of smallpox and the near-success with polio — Deaton finds that foreign aid has done more harm than good. He argues that where the conditions for development are present, outside resources are unnecessary. Where they’re absent, ODA entrenches local elites, distorts the local economy, and discourages local initiative. The author insists that “the record of aid shows no evidence of any overall beneficial effect.”But that’s only part of the story.In 2012, ODA totaled about $136 billion. Throw in another $30 billion or so from NGOs, and total outside assistance comes to under $200 billion annually. However, net resource transfers from developing countries to rich countries are well in excess of $500 billion annually. (Transfers reached a peak of $881 billion in 2007, fell with the Great Recession, but are rising again.) Quite apart from the fact that an estimated 70 percent of “foreign aid” is actually spent on products and services from donor nations, ODA merely puts a dent in the huge disadvantage that poor countries suffer as a result of lopsided trade policies and prevailing political and commercial imbalances. In any case, just one factor in those resource flows — remittances from overseas residents of poor countries to their families back home — are twice as large as ODA.The Great Escape is a worthy effort from a senior scholar whose wide-ranging studies have led him to big-picture conclusions. Policymakers and practitioners should be listening carefully.

I learned a lot from this book. I wish the author had made it a little less graph heavy, but I liked that he thoroughly investigated all sides of his arguments. It's made me contemplate whether my service abroad was making a difference, or if I was part of the problem. I'm glad that this book was able to awaken me to that.

About the Author

Robert D. Hanser is the Coordinator of the Department of Criminal Justice and Director of the Institute of Law Enforcement at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Dr. Hanser is a researcher and writer who has written numerous publications related to corrections, correctional treatment, and other specialized areas in the field of criminal justice. He has an extensive background in treatment provision and administration. Dr. Hanser serves as a governor-appointed member of the Louisiana Reentry Advisory Council. The council is charged with developing and implementing effective reentry strategies that improve public safety throughout Louisiana.  He is the Director of Offender Programming for LaSalle Corrections and is responsible for overseeing inmate reception, drug rehabilitation, sex offender treatment, and inmate reentry. He is also the Board President for Freedmen, Inc. a non-profit organization that operates group homes and provides services for ex-offenders who leave prison and rejoin the community. Dr. Hanser is also the Lead Facilitator for the 4th Judicial District’s Batterer Intervention Program (BIP). He is a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Louisiana and Texas, a Licensed Addiction Counselor, and a Certified Anger Management Therapist.

I bought this for my 9 yr old son for Christmas. He loves the snap circuits, so this to me was a graduation to the next level of actually building the circuits. It has a good explanation of electricity and how it works. I appreciated the list of items and where to get them, so that you can build the various projects. I ordered the book well ahead of time, went through the book, then bought the materials needed to make the projects. I put the book and the materials in a nice case and gave him his own "kit" for Christmas. He LOVES it!

An excellent book for kids beginning electronics. The book is laid out in a fashion that builds confidence and knowledge for later chapters. It is written in a fun and engaging way - my ten year old loves it and the projects thus far. The breadboard projects are his preference as parts can then be re-purposed for other projects. This books provides a variety of projects not found in other sources. Highly recommend!

I purchased this book for my 6-year-old son. We're just on the second project, but he's enjoying the book.Here's what I like:- breakdown of concepts- approachable material for beginners- reads like a textbook, but not as boring!Here's what I'd like to see- quizzes at the end of each project- more product alternatives if suggestions are unavailableSome of the item numbers were no longer available through the supplier. That made it a little tough to decide what substitute to purchase, especially since I have no experience with creating engineering projects!Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

My 10 year old son loves this book. He has "graduated' from his electronic snap circuit sets to Arduino. I had a spiral binding put on the book for a few dollars so my son wouldn't ruin the spine with as much as he is going to look at this book.

My twelve-year-old grandson loves this book. Read it from cover to cover the first few days he had it. He has completed many of the projects and is still going in this book. One thing I really like is that this book is not dummied down. It will challenge a kid and is definitely kid-friendly.

This is not your ordinary Electronics book that gives a series of steps, lists down the components and tells you what happened. It has a systematic approach that can only come from experience.The author builds out the basics first by writing a section that tells us about what electricity is, then moving things with electricity + magnets and finally how to generate electricity. Each of the concepts are explained well and there are projects to try out to understand them clearly. I agree with the author, that if you are looking to make best use of the book, it is important that you go about as pe the order of chapters presented in the book.The next 2 parts of the book include “Building Circuits” and “The Digital World”. The “Building Circuits” chapter includes projects like playing with LEDs, soldering, Transistors, Potentiometers, 555 Timer and more. I liked the “Just do it” approach in the book which included a project titled Let’s Destroy an LED. I think it is important to do that. The last part of the book goes digital with 0s and 1s, Logic Gates and more. I liked this separation of Analog v/s Digital Projects — since it will clearly explain the potential leap in functionality once you bring in the digital stuff.Overall, I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is starting out with electronics. The title says “For Kids” but trust me, it is for Kids aged from 10 to 100. It is extremely helpful to instructors who need to teach these concepts to a younger audience.If there is one book that I would have loved reading in my younger days while learning Electronics, this is the book. But better late than never.

 I will attach a silent flip-through video of the entire coloring book, as well as some photos, so you can decide for yourself if this book suits your needs.I really like the concept of coloring books which bring novels and series of novels to life for those who like to color. “The Selection Coloring Book” is a lovely example of beautiful illustrations which flesh out a series of books, in this case by Kiera Cass. It includes five of the six books in the series. The only one I could not find was “Happily Ever After”.The books are included as chapters: “The Selection”, “The Elite”, “The One”, “The Heir”, and, finally, “The Crown”. I appreciate that only a few pictures from each book could be included but was really happy to see my favorite characters and scenes represented.My only small nit with the book is the number of illustrated banner pages that are included. While I like to have a few in a coloring book of this nature, the split between character designs and banner pages is even at 20 each. My preference would have been to have at least five more character designs for a 25/15 split. I don't consider this small nit to rise to the level of removing a star from the rating, it would just have been my preference.In addition to these 40 pages which are black line drawings on white background, there are five chapter heading pages which are black background with white words and designs. I think that all of the illustrations: characters (by Sandra Suy) and lettering by Martina Flor are beautifully drawn. I will have a lot of fun coloring in this book and will re-read my books as I go along.This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:45 Design pages including 20 character designs, 20 banner designs, and 5 chapter heading pages (plus title and intro page designs) from the series “The Selection”Printed on one side of the pagePaper is white, medium weight, somewhat smooth (but still good tooth), and perforatedGlue BindingMany designs spread past the micro-perforations; however, if you choose to remove pages, nothing integral to the design will be lost.The book opens fairly flat for coloring though I had to heavily crease (break) the spine.Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paper rapidly. If I were to use this medium, I would put a blotter page below my working page to keep seeping ink from ruining the design below. I prefer card stock but several sheets of heavyweight paper works well, too. You can also remove pages from the book before coloring. I prefer not to do so to keep the continuity of the series intact.Water-based markers, India ink pens and gel pens did not bleed through but they did leave shadows on the back of the page. As the book is printed on one side of the page, this didn't trouble me.Colored pencils worked well with this paper. While it is somewhat smooth, it still has sufficient tooth (roughness) to grip pigment well. I tested both oil and wax based pencils and liked both with this paper. I was able to get deep pigment with multiple layers of the same color. I was also able to layer multiple colors well and to easily blend colors using a pencil style blending stick.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this coloring book! The paper and picture quality are outstanding, and the pictures are single-sided which is awesome. The 3 stars is because I received this product with yellow splotches on the pages throughout the book. I noticed this the moment I pulled it out of the Amazon packaging. Besides the odd coloring, I know I will enjoy spending my time bringing life to these pages.

Perfect for fans of the Selection Series! This coloring book is divine. There are sections for each of the five Selection novels, alternating between illustrated quotes and scenes from the novels. Beautiful illustrations, easy-to-tear pages, one-sided printing, I'm thrilled with this coloring book.

Bought for my daughter. She'd been waiting for this as she's an avid fan of the series. This pages are very detailed, so I wouldn't recommend for younger tweens. Beautiful companion to the Selection series of books (and soon to be movie)...

I liked the first 3 Selection books so I decided to purchase the coloring book. It has scenes from all 5 books in the series, and it is nicely illustrated. I was just hoping for more pictures of the dresses and of the Selected girls. There are only 3-5 pages devoted to each book and I just found it disappointing.

This Book is totally awesome it is now one of my favorite coloring books, It is very illustrative and detailed to perfection...I've never heard of the book or coloring book and came cross looking for very illustrated books, I highly recommend this book and I will buy again!

The pages included are beautiful, with a combination of word art and images. On each page, next to the binding, is perforation so the sheets cam be easily removed. The cover has a soft, matted feel.
